On Tuesday February 22nd I attended the 3rd People’s Assembly at County Hall in Truro. As a newcomer I was not sure what to expect; but it turned out to be a highly positive and empowering experience.
Westcountry TV were there covering the council budget but they took time to take some photos and speak to a couple of participants. After a brief introduction we formed “breakout groups” to discuss the issue of the day: fuel poverty in Cornwall. The meeting overall was possibly the most inclusive I have attended, with a statement at the start that every voice is valued equally and an acknowledgement that the confident voices are not always right, and the nervous or hesitant speakers can make very strong points. We were asked to consider the following questions: a) what can/should Cornwall Council do to tackle the issue of fuel poverty within the wider objective of moving away from fossil fuels; and b) what can individuals do within their communities? Discussions were very interesting and wide ranging. Key issues raised were:
